Taking Root at the Art Gallery of Hamilton

Artist: stylo starr
Artist: stylo starr

I recently visited the Art Gallery of Hamilton to see Taking Root, an exhibition of new acquisitions from the past fifteen years. So nice to see the AGH expanding its collection to reflect the diversity of artists and voices shaping our creative landscape today.

It was inspired by Octavia Butler’s words to “take root among the stars,”and focuses on how collections grow not only through the art itself but through the stories, questions, and commitments behind them.

The range of artists and media was impressive. I was pleased to recognize a few of the names being mentioned.

I was especially thrilled to see stylo starr’s work included. I remember seeing her pieces years ago in the back room and being struck by their vibrancy and collage-like nostalgia so reminiscent of the magazines I used to collect. Seeing her work now as part of the AGH’s permanent collection feels both fitting and inspiring.

Having an appreciation for the curatorial experience, it’s heartening to witness institutions like the AGH taking thoughtful steps to honor diverse artistic voices and perspectives.

Taking Root is a beautiful reflection of growth, inclusion, and creative evolution. Highly recommend a visit if you have the opportunity.
