The Conservatory Conversation

Moving from Advocacy to Impact.
They say the environment where a conversation happens defines the tone of what is possible. Look where our meeting took place.
I sat on a bench in the Art Gallery of Burlington conservatory, surrounded by the quiet, lush growth of the ferns and trees. It was the perfect botanical backdrop for an unfolding, a heart to heart conversation with the Hon. #KarinaGould about a long overdue community need.
As the researcher and strategist sharing a vision for Halton, it takes courage to sit with a Federal Minister and state we are missing a permanent cultural home for the African and Caribbean Diaspora.
It is a scary thing to bring a dream that is that big into the light. But I didn't arrive at that bench without a foundation. I came with a binder full of the 4-in-10 reality data of our region’s growth. More importantly, I came with a decade of experience as a curator and creative director, listening to the needs of the artists I've had the honour of working with.
We know what is missing. We need a dedicated space that can root, document, and house our creative work, past, present, and for the generations to come. This is about building a foundation of true belonging and identity, where none currently exists.
As we discussed the Women Across Lines philosophy of bridging the gaps, I was reminded of the Arms Linked approach. We move mountains together.
I am incredibly grateful to Hon. Karina Gould for her thoughtful ear. During our conversation, she provided an excellent framework of resources, contacts, and next steps to ensure this vision isn’t just a pitch, but a plan.
With the proof of concept demand from the collective work of ST!LL BLOOM!NG, the Annual Summer Emancipation Art Exhibition, and our Black History Month shows, we have all the evidence we need to begin.
I’m looking forward to the climb. Let’s build something that allows everyone to keep blooming in Halton.
I would love to hear from you. What is a vision or an idea you have courageously initiated lately? When was the last time you decided to "move the mountain," even when the path wasn't yet paved?
Share your thoughts. I’d love to celebrate your courage with you.
With Love & Encouragement,
Francesca
