Everything Old Is New Again

Updated: Mar 27, 2021

Creative Expression At It’s Best!

About 8 weeks ago I started a home project that involved painting an old dining room suite bought in 2019. I found the item listed on Kijiji. The seller wanted to reclaim space in the garage and lucky for me they were selling the furniture for a song. I remember pulling into their driveway hoping this was going to be “the one” because I had been looking for a longtime. Indeed it was. Just one look and I knew I was going to make an offer. Even better, the furniture was made in Canada by a very reputable company. After a quick inspection there was no doubt in my mind this dining room set was perfect for what I was imagining. Soft, silky cream tones and a beautiful antique finish would take this suite of furniture from a dark heavy look to something softer, lighter, dreamy and romantic. Beautifully crafted and built to last, I couldn’t wait to breathe new life into each piece..

I had no idea how much time and energy would go into this project. I knew what I wanted even if it took a year to complete. Because this was a dream project it was up to me to make it happen. And from start to finish that’s exactly what I did. The timing was perfect. Since most stores were still closed due the pandemic crisis this was something I looked forward to after work and on weekends.

Painting projects can be very therapeutic. The mind can focus on the task at hand and nothing else. Painting is a great way to decompress and relax. Add to that recycling, reclaiming and restoring was a welcomed process. The simple act of taking something old to make it look new again was rejuvenating on every level.

About two weeks into the project I roped in a dear friend to make sure my work was on point and everything used was going to provide the finish I had hoped for. With time and patience, thankfully my friend had endless patience for my project, the painting process was complete and the furniture lovingly restored with a fresh new coat of paint. And if I don’t say so myself, it looks fabulous!

It makes sense to look to the past for inspiration instead of jumping on the next trend. Especially if it’s something you love and know you will enjoy seeing everyday. But to each his own. Having found intrinsically good quality and styling in this furniture I know I’ll enjoy it for many years to come.

Creative art experiences encourage creative thinking, boots self-esteem and like my painting project, offers a sense of accomplishment. So, what’s your next painting project going to be?
